Hey guys, I am Sarah. Every week I comb through hundreds of DIY videos preparing projects for our weekly Maker show, Maker Break. Along the way, I find some good projects… and some GREAT ones, And right now, I’m going to share them with you! This Sarah’s Top 5 DIY, Mother’s Day Projects Because Mother’s Day Is this Sunday!

# 5 – DIY Huntress

Let’s Get to It with #5! Sam the DIY huntress has a 3 Tool Cutting Board project that is absolutely gorgeous and does not require you to have a planer, OR a jointer! That’s right, she made this as simple as possible without sacrificing functionality or beauty. She used a couple different types of wood to give her cutting boards some added character, but if you only have one species of wood that is totally fine. If this is a project you are going to make and since it does not require a planer, just be prepared for a few days of sanding. But I promise you the outcome is so worth it!

#4 – Living to DIY with Rachel Metz

Living to DIY with Rachel Mets is #4! This project would be perfect for any mom with with a green thumb! Rachel made a matching pair of DIY Concrete and wooden stand planters. These are simple but do take a bit of time because the quikrete needs to set. So make sure you account for that before you start. Once both of her planters were set she  got them removed from the plastic buckets, she traced the bottom of the planter onto her plywood so she would have the exact dimensions for the stand. After adding a couple dowel rods to the bottom and some outdoor friendly finish these were ready for flowers!

#3 – 3×3 Custom

Next Up is #3. Tamar from 3×3 Custom made a stack-able salt cup display out of scrap wood and some brass. She was inspired by a marble version that she had purchased a few years before and was challenged to make one without a lathe! So she used a 3” hole saw for the circle cuts then used a forstner bit to carve out the middle of the cups. Next she used her routing table to cut a rivet into the bottom of the little pots so they could nestle inside of each other making them stack-able. She made the little brass lid, then sanded down the edges until it was smooth to the touch. This is a cute custom gift that that would really come in handy, especially if the person you are gifting loves to cook!

#2 – Ana White

# 2 is Ana White! Ana made this simple Wine Crate that doubles as a serving tray for around only $15. (Well $15 before you add the wine that is, and of course you need to add the wine, plus if you used scrap wood it would be even a little bit cheaper.)  Even if you are not a skilled woodworker you can totally tackle this project. She used a 1×8 board and a 1×3 board cut into several different lengths. Ana used a jigsaw to cut out the half circles to support the wine bottles then she assembled the entire box using wood glue and brad nails. Next she added some stain and handles to make it easier to carry!

#1 -April Wilkerson

Finally, coming in at #1 is April Wilkerson and this outdoor Rocking Chair that would be perfect for any deck or covered patio. She said you can use whatever lumber choice you want but she had Western Red Cedar left over from an earlier build and she really likes that it is sturdy, but still lightweight. She used 6, 1×6 boards and used a template to map out all of the pieces she would need. After milling up the pieces so they were nice and smooth, cutting the strips of wood for the slats and THEN, creating the perfect template for the actual rocker pieces of the chair it was finally time to put everything together. If you want to make this for your mama for Mother’s day you can find April’s links for templates in her video description!

That’s it!

Okay, so yeah, if you make any of these projects for your mom, your wife or just a special mom in your life I am sure she will love it. Personally? I am making my mom a flower planter box to fit over her mailbox for mother’s day. But more importantly, don’t forget to tell her how much she means to you and that you love her. Sometime’s us moms forget, and it’s nice to hear!
