There are several impressive features of this new charger that may justify the expense over the M18 Sequential 6-Bay charger 48-59-1806 ($99) even if you don’t have any M12 batteries to charge.
To start with this is the fastest Milwaukee charger period. It will charge a M18 5.0Ah ($129) in under an hour, a M18 3.0Ah in only 37 minutes which is 40% than any/all other M18 charger. It will then also charge all 3 bays simultaneously so 3x 5.0Ah fully charged in less than an hour. The M12 does the same where the M12 4.0Ah will also be fully charged in under an hour and can do 3 simultaneously. When working with a mix of M18 & M12 batteries the Rapid Charger works to sequentially charge the batteries with the M12/M18 paired across from it. If you need one battery charged over the other pull both out and put the battery you want to have priority in first.
