Dewalt’s DCS331 has been on the market since 2012, and over 6 years later, Dewalt has finally released a long-awaited upgrade. The DCS334 Jigsaw has arrived, and it’s engineered for the XR battery platform, offering a lot of new upgrades over the 331.

For many Dewalt fans, especially those who may be approaching year 7 on their original 20V MAX jigsaw, the question now is, “should I upgrade?”

To help us answer that question, we gave the tools to Jason Brown @CHOPDSHOP, a maker and craftsman of over 15 years, and asked him to compare them. Then we headed back to Ohio Power Tool where Kris Cousins takes them apart to examine the upgrades in design and engineering.

Some tools stand the test of time – just not always the battery powered ones, which as of lately, tend to get lost in the annual upgrades of battery platforms and motor improvements. Somehow, Dewalt’s DCS331 has been on the market since 2012! And over 6 years later, Dewalt has finally released a long-awaited upgrade.

The DCS 334 Jigsaw has arrived.

It’s now engineered for the updated XR battery platform, and offers a lot of new upgrades over the 331. For many Dewalt fans, who may be approaching year 7 on their original 20V MAX jigsaw, the question now is, should I upgrade?

To help answer that question, we gave the tools to Jason Brown of Chopped Shop, a maker and craftsman of over 15 years, and asked him to compare them.

The obvious benefits of brushless vs brushed motors makes the newer model shine, with it’s longer run time and higher, consistent power. Despite the motor, Dewalt really took all considerations with it’s upgraded features. Although the DCS331 is still a solid Jigsaw, Jason agrees that the DCS334 is worth the upgrade.

Next we headed back to Ohio Power Tool, where their resident gearhead and tool technician Kris opened them up side by side to give us an Inside Look at the upgraded design in both Dewalt 20V Max Jigsaws.

Kris also confirms the noticeable upgrades and boasts the design of each Jigsaw. As he proceeds to go back and forth with this Inside Look, it’s pretty clear the DCS334 features out weigh the DCS331.

After reviewing with Jason, ripping them apart and detailing with Kris. I think we can confidently answer the question of this topic, yes, you should upgrade!

Thanks again to Jason Brown at Chopped Shop, and Kris at Ohio Power Tool for the help on this one. Don’t forget: if you’re looking for a new power tool to add to your garage, go check out OhioPowerTool.com – they’ve got jigsaws from all the top manufacturers, as well as the best jigsaw blades from Diablo, Lenox and more.
