Watching Shark Tank the other day and saw a couple of guys who were showing a new Tool Box called the “Cool Box”. First thought it might be a tool box with cooler built-in (and thought, genius) but then realized they just thought their product was so “cool” they needed to put it in the name. You shouldn’t have to call you own product “cool” especially if it doesn’t cool anything. Then they listed the features which all sounded good USB charger, power strip, Bluetooth radio/speakers, LED light, magnetic lid, bottle opener, etc. But then they came to the price tag $250 (on their site now $199). Huh… Does it come full of tools for that price? It is hard to imagine paying that price for an off brand tool box but on Indiegogo right now they are near a half million dollars in pre-order. WOW.
Radios in tool storage is not new and up until this point always seem to not do so well. The CLC Tech Gear Stereo 18” bag A233 ($39) is very reasonably priced and it is being discontinued. It was a nice quality bag although no Bluetooth (phone stuck in the bag) might have been it’s downfall. Or a really nice 3 drawer tool box like the Armstong 23″ 16-603 is only $69 and it’s Made in USA. We would have to see the quality of this tool box and speakers to give it a fair assessment. There are compact Bluetooth speakers alone that could make this worth every penny. Is it something pros will buy and continue to use and rebuy or are these going to sell, then sit full of unused tools and we’ll never hear anything about the Cool Box again?
Either way it looks like all the Dewalt, Makita and Milwaukees of the world missed out on a concept that a lot of people are currently pretty excited about. Would have been much “cooler” if it charged someones cordless tool batteries as well. We love to see entrepreneurs do well with new products, we like the concept and really do wish them well on the Cool Box!
